Do you feel that you are being paid what you deserve? I would imagine that the majority of people would have answered this question with a big fat no. So what can we do if we find ourselves in this situation? What options are open to us? In this article, I aim to answer these questions and I hope that the advice helps people to start earning what they are worth.
A good friend of mine is employed by a company who are basically paying him fifty percent below the industry standard for the role that he is in. My friends name is Ian, he is a real good guy but he is also a bit of a wimp. I have been very annoyed about the way in which his company have been using and treating him over the last few years. Ian has been a very loyal, hard working and competent employee and should have been treated with a lot more respect. Some of the stories that he has told me about the way in which people have spoken to him, has left me quite shocked and disgusted.
I have been advising Ian to do something about the situation for the last couple of years, but the advice was largely ignored. He did not want to rock the boat as he felt it might affect his future career prospects with the company. Why would you want a career with this type of company, I thought to myself?
The final straw for Ian came at the start of this year. His company had stated that they would review his salary in February. Have a guess what happened? By the end of July nothing had even been mentioned about this review by his employers. Even a simple statement from them, stating that the review would take place later in the year or that they had reviewed the salary and that it was not going to be increased, would have been better than nothing.
In the last couple of weeks Ian has been looking for a similar role with a different company and I am happy to report that he has been successful on finding a new employer with a much higher salary.
